I'm a runner as well and I find that it not only balances me immensely, it also gives me the time and solitude to chew on problems and find creative ways to solve them. I don't even have to be thinking about the problem to get this effect. When I am studying for a certification, I listen to questions I record on MP3 and my recall is better than reviewing material any other way. I also listen to a lot of technology podcasts to learn about new technologies, and find the information is easier to recall than if I read the same information in a magazine. There is a flow to running that seems to translate to the mind.

I run regularly and for me the most dramatic effect is not so much on depression but on stress - but I agree with Alanis Morisette about it's 'cleansing' effect on the mind.
