Matrices problem 1

.

In this problem you need to separate in your working memory both outer and inner circles in each figure in the matrix. Consider the outer circle first. In the top row,  it is 3/4 length, in the middle row it is 1/2 length, and in the bottom row it is 1/4 length.  Now consider the inner circle. In the first colum it is quarter length, in the middle column it is 1/2 length, and in the last row it is 3/4 length. So the correct figure should be a combination of a 1/4 length outer circle and a 3/4 length inner circle – i.e. answer C.

This problem is more working-memory intensive (i.e. more information needs to be kept track of in your mental workspace). Take the top row. You can see that the dot-cross-dash sequence in the first figure simply rotates, so  the ‘?’ configuration will be dot-cross-dash (i.e. answers A, B or D). Take the second row. This rotates in the opposite direction, and the ‘?’ configuration will be dash-dot-cross. This rules out answer B, and we are left with A or D. Take the last row. This sequence rotates in the same way as the first row, and the ‘?’ configuration will be cross-dash-dot. The answer is therfore ‘A’. (Exactly the same configuration as we started with).

This matrix problem involves math-like operations. If you superimpose the first and second figure of each row, and subtract any element that is shared between them, you are left with the third figure in the row. Take the first row. The shared element here is the left line. Take the second row. The shared element here is the bottom line and the bottom left to top right diagonal line. In the bottom row, the shared element is the diagonal line, leaving a square with a dot (there is always a dot in each figure) – i.e. answer D.

This is another ‘operation’ type Matrix problem. The cross ovals are positive-signed, and the line ovals are negative-signed. the blank ovals are the sum. In the top row, +3 -1 = 2. In the second row, +1 +2 = 3. In the last row -3 +4 = 1. Thus, the answer is E.
